Reading Games Well: A New Lens on Interpretive Play
April 10, 2026

This talk will introduce the idea of "reading games" as the evocation of personal player responses, exploring the core ideas from the recent book "The Well-Read Game: On Playing Thoughtfully" by Tracy Fullerton and Matthew Farber. Fullerton will discuss the way in which "readings" of games go beyond the commonly understood outcomes of play (winning or losing), or understandings of the formal game structures and highlight instead the ephemeral and emotional experiences of play that all players have, though rarely discuss. When we play as "readers" our responses share many of the same qualities of engaging with literary, cinematic, and other expressive texts. Fullerton will share example readings as well as games and curriculum designed to enhance the potential for effective student readings of games, showing the ways that personal player response can be used in classrooms, reading groups, or co-play to deepen our understanding of games and share the experiences we have with them. The audience for this talk is game scholars, designers, and the games and learning community. Interactive designers looking to create transformational digital experiences will also find this talk illuminating.

Tracy Fullerton is an experimental game designer, professor, author and was the founding director of the USC Games program. Her research center, the Game Innovation Lab, has produced a number of influential independent games, including Cloud, flOw, Darfur is Dying, The Night Journey and Walden, a game, which was named "Game of the Year" at Games for Change 2017 and "Developer Choice" at IndieCade 2017. Tracy is the author of "Game Design Workshop: A Playcentric Approach to Creating Innovative Games" and "The Well-Read Game: On Playing Thoughtfully," co-authored with Matthew Farber. In addition to her academic positions, Fullerton currently sits on the boards of directors for Square Enix Holdings and Games for Change and serves as "thatgameadvisor" for thatgamecompany's publishing group.
