Building AI-Powered Tools for Editable Visual Effects
November 14, 2025

Generative AI (GenAI) has transformed visual effect design. Complex motion and depth cues effects that are traditionally difficult to produce can now be created with just text prompts. However, most GenAI tools focus on generating finished pixels, often leaving designers with static outputs that are difficult to modify or repurpose.AI-powered effect design tools should not just generate pixels, they should generate possibilities and unlock iterative explorations. In this talk, I will share some recent research on empowering 2D graphics designers to craft advanced motion and depth effects. I will show how AI-driven automation of key visual tasks can streamline effect authoring workflows without sacrificing creative control.

Cuong Nguyen is a Senior Research Scientist at Adobe Research in San Francisco, specializing in Human-Computer Interaction with a focus on motion graphics, VR/AR, and video editing. His current research explores combining HCI principles with frontier models to build useful, reliable, and intelligent creative assistants. His work has been published in premier venues such as ACM CHI, UIST, and CSCW, with three papers receiving Best Paper Honorable Mention awards. These research efforts have led to several successful technology transfers, bringing VR and motion graphics features to Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Adobe Express.
