FAQ about online communication for the class.

I want to know what is happening in class (or what to read for class):

Go to the schedule http://extools.stanford.edu/schedule.html and follow the links for the session or the readings (if there is no readings link, there are no readings assigned yet).
Note that sessions more than a week away may not have the details filled in.

I want to upload files (pictures, videos, whatever):

Each team has a directory on the d.school server.
You can use this as you wish, and when we ask for on-line hand-ins we may ask you to put files there.
ftp://dsandbox.stanford.edu/student/extools/group# (where the # is your number).
You can use SecureFX (which you can download from Essential Stanford Software) to access it.
User is "student" password is ***** [ask us]
You can also upload small things to your Basecamp account (see below). Find directions there

I want to ask an administrative question (e.g., about assignments, missing class, etc.)

Email msande430-spr0506-staff@lists.stanford.edu
The message will be delivered to all the teaching team. If you want to send it to specific members, use the email addresses from the web site http://extools.stanford.edu/overview.html#team

OPTIONAL ADDITIONAL TOOLS

I want to communicate/coordinate with my team:

We have set up a project on Basecamp at http://extools.grouphub.com/login
You should have received an email with your user name (your email name) and password.
Once you log in you should be able to see your project and use it for a to-do list, mailing list, etc.
Use Basecamp documentation and help to see what you can do.
Each team can decide whether and how to use it.
Materials you put here will be visible to the teaching team, but not to other teams or the sites.
You can choose whether to add your coach. If you want to (which is generally a good idea), send her/his name and email address to winograd@cs.stanford.edu

I found a cool thing on line that I'd like to share with the class.

Tag it with the extools tag in de.licio.us http://del.icio.us/extools
Use relevant tags to associate it with specific topics.

For more on using del.icio.us, see the tutorial page http://extools.stanford.edu/delicious_howto.html

I'd like to see the questions and cool things that others have posted.

Check http://del.icio.us/tag/extools from time to time.

I want to start a discussion about a related topic.

You can post an entry on the blog http://xdtools.blogspot.com/
Follow the help there, or ask Kathy
Don't make assumptions about how soon it will be read. It's there for people who want to try it out.

If you need a teaching team response, mail to the staff list.

I'd rather use some other on-line thing that I already know and love.

Feel free to use anything. Since Kathy is studying the use of online information exchange, it would be great if you could let her know and see if she wants to know more about it.

Have fun!
