MyriadHub

Abstract

Email has scaled our ability to speak to hundreds of people, but it has not equivalently scaled our ability to listen and respond. Emailing hundreds of people for their feedback, for example, requires either an impersonal survey or hours of effort manually carrying out many similar conversations. To allow users to hold many similar email conversations in parallel, we explore conversational remixing: structuring and adapting previous email conversations to create new responses quickly. To bootstrap a conversational remixing system, users hold the first conversations as they would normally. Users or optionally valet crowd workers then extract underlying conversational patterns and response rules to accelerate responses to future similar emails. We introduce MyriadHub, a mail client that tracks and manages conversational remixes for large-scale email conversations such as those needed for managing introduction requests, intern applications, and administrative queries. In a controlled evaluation, comparing MyriadHub to a standard email survey, MyriadHub doubled the recipients' response rate and tripled the number of words that conversational partners responded with.
