We interviewed campus visitors, students, and educators to find out about how they learned about Stanford. We found that they felt many aspects were missing from the resources they used to learn about Stanford.

Experience Prototype

Test it

Through three experience prototypes, we tested different assumptions to determine what direction we would like to go in moving forward. We tested whether people need to be in a specific site to enjoy learning about that site, whether people find it valuable to learn about the historical aspects of the sites they occupy, and whether people feel comfortable sharing personal stories related to specific sites publicly.

We created a video of how we envision sharing hidden, or untold, aspects of Stanford through StanX.

Low-fi Prototype

Try it

We created a paper prototype of our AR app, and tested it on various members of our Stanford community, including students, visitors to campus, and an administrator. We learned that users require more guidance than we anticipated in our initial design.

Medium-fi Prototype

See it

We moved from a paper prototype to a digital prototype, that demos our UI plans. We modified our UI to incorporate what we learned from the Low-fi prototype, and are providing more, brief instructions in the app, and moving from a vague, ambiguous Explore mode to Tour modes.

Group Heuristic Evaluation

Our fellow classmates used Jakob Nielsen's Heuristic Evaluation techniques to give us a full and concise evaluation of our project, which we then incorporated in our High-Fi Prototype.

Hi-fidelity Prototype

Use it

Finally, after going from needfinding and brainstorming to developing low and medium fidelity prototypes, we have developed a high fidelity prototype using Apple's ARKit. In the high fidelity prototype all of our tasks have been implemented, and users can begin to explore the hidden stories of Stanford in AR with photos and audio. Users can discover our content through their own exploration, by finding points of interest on the StanX map, or following StanX's tours through campus.

Poster & Pitch Slide

To round it all up, we presented our product at the CS147 Project Fair on Friday Dec 8. We got many people to try out our project and learn a bit about Stanford & AR. It was a lot of fun and we are happy that we built something that people genuinely seemed to enjoy using. You can find our final poster and slide below.
