?is thesis investigates collective creation — groups of people participating in a collaborative, dis- tributed e?ort to accomplish a particular task. ?rough qualitative and quantitative investigation of existing collective creation projects, we extract design principles and empirically test tools that instantiate these principles. Speci?cally, we focus on encouraging constructive ideation in collec- tive creation, and on coordinating tasks and actions in a distributed collective creation project, the collaboratively edited encyclopedia Wikipedia. ?ese behaviors and activities are measured through user studies that deploy each of two tools that implement these ideas.
