Translating Usage into Technology

The author's advanced development teams at Intel have developed the foundational technologies for a series of new computing platforms including Intel's recently announced Viiv™ and vPro™ platforms. This talk will focus on the team's methodology of starting with user problems and needs and translating these problems and needs into a series of working technologies and prototypes, standards, and eventually products in the marketplace.



Mark Abel is the Co-General Manager of the Platform Software Division (PSD) in Intel's Software and Solutions Group where he is responsible for the software shipping with tens of millions of Intel platforms each year. Prior to becoming PSD co-GM at the end of 2005, Mr. Abel was Director of Advanced Development in Intel's Digital Home Group and Desktop Platforms Group. In this role, Mr. Abel's teams initiated Intel's Digital Home and Digital Office technology programs and developed many of the core technologies in Intel's new Viiv™ and vPro™ platforms.

Before joining Intel in 1991, Mr. Abel was a principal in groupware and networking research projects at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) and at U S WEST Advanced Technologies. He has also held positions with Siemens AG in Munich, Germany and with AT&T Bell Labs. He is the author/co-author of over 20 journal and conference papers and is one of Intel's Distinguished Lecturers.
