The next generation of photo search
May 12, 2006

Riya (www.riya.com) is photo search that uses face recognition to search through your mountains of digital photos to find the ones you are looking for. Faces are automatically detected by Riya, the user trains Riya by naming some of the people, and then Riya starts recognizing people automatically. This talk will cover some of the user interface choices to simplify a complex face recognition algorithm for a consumer product. For example, the interface that asked the user to name people (to train Riya) went through many iterations. Another design choice is the scope of the recognition. Global recognition across everyone's photos (typical of existing security products) is not necessary. Riya is optimized for local recognition of your contacts in your photos.
