If you knwo waht to do with placelab, please ignore. First some details on the phones. You need to have a SIM card to use the phone. The place for the SIM card is behind the battery next to the memory card slot. Remember also to insert the memory card in to the phone. The memory card is provided in the package. It is also good idea to charge the phone first for a while (read the correct amount from the manual, I do not have it at hand right now) To install applications on the phone you do not need to install PC Suite on your laptop. You can install it, but you can very well work also without it (at least if you have bluetooth capable laptop). In the following instructions Application Key is the funny looking Yin-Yang like key next to "1". You will get from the idle screen to the application menu by pressing Application Key once. If you want to switch between currently running applications keep the Application Key down for few seconds and a list of all active (started) applications appears on the screen (like Alt-F4) To lock the keys press left soft key (above the Application Key) and "*" key in quick succession. Unlocking: same sequence. Installing an app (or moving a file) to the phone happens this way (unless you are using PC suite) * turn on the Bluetooth on the phone (press Application Key to get to the app menu, scroll down until you see the connectivity folder, open it and Bluetooth application inside that folder. You can turn on the bluetooth by pressing the "joy stick" key. Note that you need to name your phone first, this means the name, which the other bluetooth devices see) * turn on the Bluetooth on your laptop * now right-click on the file you need to send in file explorer. Select "Send to" > "Bluetooth" > "Other..." * Do Find Device and select your phone from the list. By pressing Ok the file transfer happens. * Well, ok. I was cheating a little. Either the phone or laptop asks for pass key (use shortest possible - like "2"), which you then need to enter also to the other device. This is because of security reasons (You do not want everyone around you transfer files to your phone, do you?). In the subsequent transfers you do not need to enter this anymore. * If the file is JAR or SIS (Symbian Installation file) the phone recognizes them automatically and starts the installation process. It asks if to trust the application and where to install the application (there is more memory on the memory card, so it is good idea to use it) * After installation remove the installation file from the message inbox. It might cause problems when installing the next version of the same program in the future. Now to placelab Installation >From placelab.org download the Series 60 phone ZIP file. Extract all the files to some folder (select the use folder names option) The phone sw is in the "phone" directory in the placelab distribution. The placelab requires two files to be installed on the phone. The placelab server and the placelab midlets. For the server part (that's the native software package which listens the Cell IDs and something else) install either "placelab.sis" or "placelab_autostart.sis". The difference is that autostart is running on the background all the time and the other one you need to manually start every time you need it. I tried placelab with the manually started server and it worked fine. Install the server (see above) Install the midlets by sending the placelab_s60_dist.jar" to the phone. Running You need to start the server first (unless you are using the autostart version). Scroll down the application list/menu until you see the application "Server" (Yes, the name could be a little more descriptive) and start it. Do not exit this application but return to the application menu by pressing the Application Key. Now scroll down to the desired application (for example "Stumbler") and start it. If you get some error messages from the apps, check that the "Server" is running in the background (long press of the Application Key) Uploading the stumble data After you have gathered some location data with the phone you might want to send it back to the placelab servers through the laptop. You need to have Windows XP service pack 2 running on your PC. In the placelab distribution there is a folder called "Server". Run the "RunServer" batch file. You should get a command screen with a listening.... prompt or something like it. I have not yet downloaded any map data on the phone, but I think you need to have the bluetooth server running on the laptop too for that. Over and out, Hartti
