Overview
This assignment has two parts. For the first part, you will need to find an example of ageism to share in class on Thursday. For the second part, you will need to read four short pieces and come up with three thought-provoking questions to send to the TA before class.
Assignment due:
All of us incorporate attitudes and stereotypes about aging from
various sources such as people around us, jokes, greeting cards and
the media. For the next class session, you are to bring at least one
example of ageism to share. If you keep your eyes and ears attuned to
ageism, you are certain to encounter examples easily, e.g. in casual conversation, on TV, in newspapers or magazines, etc. We will have a way to project from hardcopy, so the easiest thing is to bring in the card, magazine, etc. if it is in print form, or to print it out if you can. We'll also be able to project from URLs you bring. Or it can just be something you heard and want to tell about.
Reading Assignment due:
For some of the readings and activities in class we will ask you to submit questions to facilitate discussion. For each of these sessions, (including today's readings), we want you to write three thought provoking questions pertinent to the readings, which should be sent to the TA (Steve Marmon, smarmon@stanford.edu) by 11pm the night before class. You can choose whichever readings most interest you, and write your questions for more than one, or all three on the same reading. These questions should be designed to inspire class discussion and will be graded on a check/check + grading scale. We are looking for questions that indicate thoughtful reading of the assignments and stimulate intellectual dialogue. You should be prepared to discuss the questions you submit and explicate your own thoughts about them. The TA will compile all of the questions and post them to the course website.
